About the Division of Emergency Medicine

The Emergency Department (ED) at the Children’s Hospital of Michigan is one of the busiest emergency departments in the Country and is a level-1 Pediatric Trauma Center. The ED provides care to a complete spectrum of children with medical, mental health and surgical conditions as well as traumatic injuries. We aim to provide the highest quality medical care to the children and families that we serve. Our Emergency Department is staffed 24/7/365 with experts in pediatric care. Our entire nursing team are specifically trained pediatric emergency nurses. Our ED is staffed by approximately 65 fellowship trained pediatric emergency physicians, pediatricians and pediatric nurse practitioners and physician assistants.

Children's Hospital of Michigan Emergency Department Facts:

  • The only Emergency Department in the Detroit tri-county area that has 24/7/365 coverage by pediatric emergency medicine subspecialty physicians. These physicians have all had 3 additional years of fellowship training in pediatric emergency care.
  • The only Emergency Department in the Detroit tri-county area area that has 24/7/365 coverage with pediatric nurses who are specifically trained to care for children. These specialized nurses are trained to make children and families feel comfortable and are experts in pediatric procedures such as IV placement
  • Everything we do is focused upon providing safe, high-quality, compassionate and child- centered care.
  • Child Life Specialists on duty who help keep children comfortable and distracted for procedures.
  • Our pediatric respiratory therapists are specialized and are trained to provide support for a wide range of respiratory issues that affect children.
  • The same pediatric ED specialists work at both our Detroit and Troy locations.

Emergency Medicine Clinical Programs

We have a full complement of pediatric emergency services including designation as a Poison Control Center, a Level-1 Pediatric Trauma Center and a verified Pediatric Burn Center. Additionally, PANDA, our pediatric critical care center provides support to the referring hospitals in our region, and transports critically ill and injured children to our institution.

  • Imaging Services:

A full range of radiology services are available for the evaluation of emergency patients. Two dedicated x-ray suites are located within the department. In addition, a 64 slice CT scan and the MRI suite are located adjacent to the ED. Ultrasound and nuclear medicine services are also available. In addition, a new state-of-the art CT is being installed in the fall of 2021 which will provide the clearest and most advanced images, while reducing radiation to our patients. The CT and MRI imaging suites are located adjacent to the ED which allows for easy access. There is also an ultrasound suite in the ED that allows our physicians to perform imaging on patients without exposing them to radiation. Our imaging team is also specifically pediatric trained which allows them to identify subtle findings that occur in children.

  • Bedside Ultrasound Innovation:

We are always seeking opportunities to improve. One recent success, that has been led by Dr. Demetris Haritos and Dr. Jen Noble, has been our use of ultrasound at the bedside. We now use the ultrasound as an adjunct to the physical exam, which enables us to rapidly identify certain conditions, to perform procedures more safely, improving the accuracy of our care.

Education

We are an academic emergency department and are home to one of the largest and most sought-after fellowship programs in the United States, which is led by Dr. Katherine McVety.

We also host weekly 3-hour education sessions, and on a quarterly basis, host a remote, state-wide pediatric emergency Grand Rounds that helps disseminate our experience, led by Dr. Earl Hartwig. We have a robust simulation training program for our physicians, fellows, APPs and nurses. We routinely practice procedures and complex cases to ensure that our team is ready to respond to any possible scenario. Our simulation program is led by Dr. Kelly Levasseur

Research

We aim to provide the best evidence-based care to our children. Care is driven by discovery. We have dozens of active research projects in the Division of Emergency Medicine. We are one of only a few Children’s Emergency Departments to be awarded a NIH grant. Our most recent NIH award, earned by Drs. Usha Sethuraman and Nirupama Kannikeswaran, has supported discovery of identifying risk factors for severe COVID disease.

The faculty of the Emergency Department at the Children’s Hospital of Michigan strive for excellence and are seeking opportunities to work with our community to grow, collaborate and innovate.

Special Areas of Focus

Providing the best care possible in the emergency setting is essential, as it can directly and rapidly impact the care of our children. We are leaders in quality. We have a robust quality committee in the Division of Emergency Medicine that develops evidence based care protocols, drives process changes, and looks for systems issues when reviewing the care that we provide. We also lead quality at Children’s Hospital. One of our faculty, Dr. Rajan Arora, is the Associate Program Director for the Pediatric Residency Program, and his is responsible for teaching dozens of students each year to include key aspects of quality into their practice. We also lead quality outside of our walls. Dr. Kelly Levasseur is the Chair of the Committee of Quality Transformation for the American Academy of Pediatrics, Section of Emergency Medicine.

2021 Annual Division Goals

1. To Improve the Quality of Care we Provide to our Critically Ill Patients

2. To Lead PEM Education in the State of Michigan

3. To Improve our Divisions Academic Infrastructure and Productivity, Which Will Drive Improvement in Pediatric Emergency Medicine.

PEM Mission Statement

“We will lead pediatric emergency care by driving improvement through the integration of quality, advocacy, education and research. We will continuously adapt and improve our care based upon science.”
