About the Division of Infectious Diseases

Specialists in the Division of Infectious Diseases at the Children's Hospital of Michigan (CHM) provide a wide range of consultative and direct care services for all types of infectious diseases in patients ranging from birth to 21 years of age. These services include diagnosis and management of difficult infectious diseases cases as well as antibiotic recommendations.

A 26-bed inpatient unit is devoted for the care of patients with infectious diseases under the direct supervision of one of the attending staff. Nurses on the unit are dedicated to the care of such patients. The division also provides consultative service to all other medical and surgical units at CHM.

Outpatient referrals and consultations can be seen during three days of the week (Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays) in the afternoon with prior appointment. Acute and urgent cases may be referred to the Emergency Department at CHM, where Infectious Diseases staff may be consulted to see the patients.

Research interests are wide but focus mainly on bacterial and viral infections. Main areas of interest are the treatment of various infections with newer antimicrobial agents, assessment of new vaccines, and the study of otitis media, respiratory infections, Kawasaki Disease, endocarditis, and rheumatic fever.
