About the Division of Cardiology

From open-heart surgery and transplants to interventional cardiology and fetal echocardiography, the multidisciplinary team at Children’s Hospital of Michigan provides a full range of advanced services for newborns, infants, children and adolescents with congenital or acquired heart disease and for adults with congenital heart disease.

 

The range of invasive and non-invasive procedures, include screening of children at risk of developing acquired heart problems, stress testing, advanced diagnostic cardiac imaging, electrophysiology, pacemakers and cardiac catheterization 

 

The Department of Cardiovascular Surgery offers surgical repair for the whole spectrum of congenital and acquired heart defects in children, with special expertise in the primary repair of heart disease in newborns and infants.


Leadership

The Chief of Pediatric Cardiology is Gautam K. Singh, MD, MRCP, FACC, FASE, and the Chief of Pediatric Cardiovascular Surgery is Mamdouh Al-Ahmadi, MD. The Children's Hospital of Michigan cardiology team consists of 16 Pediatric Cardiologists and two Pediatric Cardiovascular Surgeons.


Cardiology and Heart Surgery Specialized Programs

The Cardiology and Heart Surgery programs at the Children's Hospital of Michigan are nationally recognized leaders in patient care and research and are ranked among America's Best programs in U.S. News & World Report's 2020-21 Best Children's Hospitals rankings. 

 

Children's Hospital of Michigan is Metropolitan Detroit's leader in treating the most children for inpatient cardiovascular care. It is also the only hospital in metropolitan Detroit that provides comprehensive family-centered, pediatric cardiac services.

 

A Pediatric Cardiac Intensive Care Unit (CICU) provides 24 hour attending-level staff dedicated to comprehensive, multidisciplinary care for cardiac patients.

Our specialized programs include:

  • Advanced Cardiac Imaging:

    Physicians at Children's Hospital of Michigan have state-of-the art echocardiography equipment to perform and interpret 2-D and 3-D echocardiography, strain and tissue Doppler imaging for cardiac mechanic and fetal cardiac evaluation to diagnose heart defects before the child is born in order to plan and develop the best possible timely treatment after birth. Cardiac MRI and CT are routinely performed for diagnostic and prognostic imaging.

  • Catheterization Procedures:

    The catheterization labs with state-of the-art equipment and with highly skilled team of three pediatric interventional Pediatric cardiologists perform every trans-catheter procedure which may be necessary for children and adults such as device closure of patent ductus arteriosus, atrial and ventricular septal defects, balloon valvuloplasty for valve stenosis, as well as most advanced, minimally invasive trans-catheter valve replacements and hybrid procedure for certain highly complex heart defects.

  • Electrophysiology and Rhythm Disorders:

    Children’s Hospital of Michigan offers the only dedicated Pediatric/Congenital Heart Electrophysiology program in the Metro Detroit. As such, Pediatric Electrophysiology experts provide innovative diagnostic services and therapies to children and patients of all ages with cardiac rhythm disorders – including invasive treatments such as pacemaker/defibrillator implantation, heart rhythm monitoring, catheter/surgical ablation of abnormal heart rhythms, and updated pharmacotherapies. In conjunction with our Heart Failure team, resynchronization (CRT) pacing therapy is offered as an alternative to standard medical management. For patients with possible inherited heart muscle (cardiomyopathy) and rhythm abnormalities primary electrical (e.g. long QT syndrome) issues, genetic testing and counseling are offered. 

  • Fetal Cardiac Care:

    Our Fetal Cardiac Care Program at Children’s Hospital of Michigan is a family-centered program that provides a comprehensive fetal heart consultation. This consultation includes fetal heart evaluation by fetal echocardiography, pre-natal management of selected cardiac disease, as well as post-natal medical and surgical planning for the care of the new-born. Our team of six fetal cardiologists are board certified pediatric cardiologists who have extensive experience in providing fetal and post-natal care for the whole spectrum of fetal/congenital heart diseases, heart rate and rhythm abnormalities, extra-cardiac anomalies affecting the fetal heart, and pre-natal conditions

     

     The Fetal Cardiac Care Program is supported by cardio-vascular surgery, genetics, new-born medicine and other pertinent services in an effort to deliver optimum pre-natal and post-natal care. A Fetal Care Nurse Navigator assists in help organize and coordinate the pre-natal and post-natal care that the baby may need as well as provide extensive support to patients and their families.   • Heart Transplantation/Advanced Failure:

    The Pediatric Heart Transplant Program at Children’s Hospital of Michigan is one of the only two United Network for organ sharing (UNOS) approved programs in the state of Michigan. Two transplant cardiologists are dedicated to the care of children awaiting heart transplants and heart transplant recipients. An Advanced Heart Failure and Cardiomyelopathy Program is available to evaluate and optimize medical therapy for those patients who may require a transplant. When necessary, ventricular assist devices are used as a lifesaving bridge to transplant. Other mechanical support devices include Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation (ECMO), which functions as a temporary replacement for the child’s heart and lungs. Two dedicated Nurse Practitioners serve as full-time Pediatric Cardiac Transplant Coordinators. Pre and post-transplant care is provided by a comprehensive care team comprised of transplant cardiologists, transplant nurse practitioners, transplant nutritionists, transplant social worker, transplant pharmacist, and transplant psychologist. 

  • Preventive Cardiology/Lipid Management:

    Children’s Hospital of Michigan pediatric lipid management program is a preventive care program for children with lipid disorders featuring specialized pediatric testing, innovative lipid management therapies, and dietary counseling. Patients are seen by a pediatric lipid specialist (cardiologist or nurse practitioner), a dietitian and an exercise specialist. 

  • Pulmonary Hypertension Program

    The Pulmonary Hypertension (PH) Program operates within the Division of Cardiology and is the only one of its kind in Metro Detroit. Specialists on staff treat children with a wide range of conditions that can cause elevated pressure within the lung arteries. The clinic sees patients in of a wide range of ages, including adult patients with congenital heart disease for screening and extensive diagnostic testing with the goals of reversing the PH to making children feel better and experience improved quality of life, to palliative care for the severest forms of the condition.

  • Michigan Adult Congenital Heart Center

    The physicians on staff at the Detroit Medical Center’s (DMC) Michigan Adult Congenital Heart Center (MACH), work together to provide multi-disciplinary care for adults with congenital heart disease. MACH physicians combine the expertise of congenital heart disease in adults with cardiovascular surgeons who also specialize in the health needs of adults with congenital heart disease, electrophysiologists who manage heart rhythm and rate abnormalities and lipidologists who manage the cholesterol problem commonly seen in adults with congenital heart disease.

  • Cardiovascular Surgery

    Offering surgical repair for the whole spectrum of congenital and acquired heart defects in children, the program also offers and performs cardiac transplant surgery for all pediatric groups. On average approximately 200 surgical procedures are performed by cardiovascular surgeons at Children's Hospital of Michigan every year.

     

    Cardiovascular surgeons and interventional cardiologists on staff at Children’s Hospital of Michigan are experts in the use of hybrid approaches to repair certain forms of complex congenital heart disease.

     

    Children’s Hospital of Michigan participates in the Society of Thoracic Surgeons (STS) Congenital Heart Surgery Database, which provides data on Operative and Adjusted Operative Mortality. Click here for further information.

Education

Children's Hospital of Michigan is a large, academic urban hospital with an excellent reputation for both patient care and a rapidly expanding research reputation within a university medical center that offers you these opportunities. Here, fellows are integral to the cardiology team and are progressively more responsible throughout their fellowship for delivering care. A multi-faceted didactic teaching program and practical experience under careful supervision will enable you to develop the scientific and humanistic skills you need to succeed in pediatric cardiology, along with the attitudes and habits necessary to continue your lifelong medical education.


The faculty in the division of cardiology at Children's Hospital of Michigan and Central Michigan University School of Medicine are dedicated to the instruction and guidance of our fellows. We know that in three short years you will be joining us in the small community of pediatric cardiology. Thus, we take pride in treating you as our colleagues from the time of your arrival.


Children's Hospital of Michigan is consistently ranked among the nation's top pediatric hospitals. There are 20 faculty pediatric cardiologists here with all subspecialties represented. We have two advanced catheterization laboratories and the latest echo and stress equipment. The Children's Hospital of Michigan is located in the heart of a large urban area offering the fellows exposure to the whole gamut of congenital and acquired heart disease.


The curriculum is designed to provide a maximum exposure to develop clinical skills and at the same time train the fellows in research skills which will enable them to complete successfully for academic pediatric cardiology positions.


We have developed a research council in cardiology to help the fellow define research interests, establish a relationship with a research mentor, and maximize potential for success in areas of grant applications, abstract presentation and manuscript acceptance. In addition, there is a hospital wide weekly Fellowship Research and Education Seminar which concentrates on areas common to all fellowships such as statistics, grant and scientific writing skills, and medical ethics. This also serves as a forum for presenting fellow research projects for valuable feedback early in the project design. We also offer an internal endowment fund for start up money to initiate fellow research.

Recommendations for Return-to-Play After COVID-19 Diagnosis

A collaborative effort of providers from Children's Hospital of Michigan and C.S. Mott Children's Hospital/Michigan Medicine has resulted in the creation of the following documents based on current information about pediatric patients who have tested positive for COVID-19 and who want to return-to-play in sports and creation.

 

·     Recommendations for return-to-play after a COVID 19 diagnosis written details

·     Recommendations for return-to-play algorithm

·     Suggested gradual return-to-play progression for PCPs

·     Suggested gradual return-to-play progression for parents
