Pediatric Emergency
Medicine Fellowship

Children’s Hospital of Michigan

Train in One of the Nation’s Busiest and Most Advanced Pediatric Emergency Departments

With approximately 80,000 annual visits, a Level-I Pediatric Trauma Center, and nationally recognized specialty programs, this Pediatric Emergency Department offers unmatched clinical exposure and academic training for fellows.

The Emergency Department (ED) at the Children’s Hospital of Michigan is among the busiest in the United States, with approximately 80,000 annual pediatric visits, providing fellows with exceptional clinical diversity and acuity. We are a Level I ACS-verified Pediatric Trauma Center, home to the state’s Poison Control Center, and one of the busiest pediatric burn centers in the nation.

The department operates in a state-of-the-art facility built in 2017 with 59 private rooms and a large four-bed resuscitation bay.  We have a separate fast-track area as well as a new, $5million mental health pod.

Our ED administrative suite is physically attached to the ED, where our trainees enjoy office space and a high-tech conference room where didactics occur.  Fellows train in an environment purpose-built for high-acuity pediatric emergency care, education, and research.

Video Tour of Our Emergency Department

Our ED is separated into different care areas, or PODs.  Each POD has its dedicated nursing and physician team and consists of 10-12 private rooms.  We have 3 PODs that are open around-the-clock, a fast track POD that is staffed for 16 hours each day and 2 other surge areas that open seasonally.  Our fellows exclusively work with PEM attendings 24/7/365. Almost all of this time is spent in our highest acuity area, but fellows also work in other areas of our ED so they learn to care for the full spectrum of emergency conditions.

Our Fellowship Program

Curriculum

Our educational curriculum is organized into 13 four-week blocks each year and is thoughtfully aligned with the American Board of Pediatrics content specifications for the Pediatric Emergency Medicine certifying examination. The full 19-block curriculum is completed twice during fellowship, giving fellows the opportunity to revisit key topics with growing clinical confidence and deeper understanding.

Education

Our educational curriculum is organized into 13 four-week blocks each year and is thoughtfully aligned with the American Board of Pediatrics content specifications for the Pediatric Emergency Medicine certifying examination. The full 19-block curriculum is completed twice during fellowship, giving fellows the opportunity to revisit key topics with growing clinical confidence and deeper understanding.

Each block is built around a focused theme and delivered in a variety of engaging formats. Fellows learn through core topic lectures, board review, case-based discussions, simulation, and hands-on procedural workshops. Dedicated self-study time, supported by a provided question bank, allows fellows to reinforce learning at their own pace.

We prioritize protected educational time, active faculty involvement, and a supportive learning environment where questions are encouraged and growth is expected. The conferences are each Wednesday from 7 AM to 10:00 AM and cover a wide range of medical and surgical topics. We host additional sessions from 10:00 – 12:00 for workshops, resuscitation training as well as the discussion of other professional topics. Over the past 2 years, we have incorporated more flipped-classroom sessions as well.

In addition to core lectures each month, we also incorporate faculty-driven board review, journal club, a literature review and a mock code. We also include procedure-based videos that supplement the content from the related block, in addition to educational support from our academic faculty. Recently, we have introduced longitudinal curricula in administration, disaster management, global health and research design, and quality improvement.

Some conferences fellows participate in that are external to our curriculum include:

  • Pediatric Emergency Medicine Quality Assurance Committee
  • Pediatric Grand Rounds
  • Emergency Medicine Grand Rounds
  • Toxicology Grand Rounds
  • Trauma Conference
  • Radiology Conference
  • Division Business Meeting

Teaching Opportunities

Pediatric emergency medicine fellows at the Children’s Hospital of Michigan have vast opportunities to teach. Teaching is part of the Pediatric Emergency Medicine fellowship and the performance of each fellow is critiqued and feedback is given. Fellows regularly teach at:
