What is Autism?

Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is a neuro-behavioral condition that affects a child’s development. The three common impairments associated with autism are communication, social interaction and repetitive, restricted behaviors, interests or activities. Symptoms of autism usually occur within the first few years of life and are more apparent when children are exposed to more difficult tasks.

Early Signs of Autism

Social Interaction
Lack of eye contact
Anxiety around strangers
No interest in being held
No concept of personal space
Lack of initiation or continuation of play with peers
No interest in group activities

Communication
Some children on the spectrum are non-verbal or non-vocal
Speech delays
Lack of purposeful language
Rote, or repetitive language

Restricted, Repetitive Patterns of Behavior or Interests
Repetitive motor or verbal behaviors
Pacing, rocking or flapping their hands
Repetitive finger movements
Restricted or repetitive type of play
Prefer to do a limited number of activities or interests
